Getting started Guide
Welcome to Databeamer
Discover how Databeamer works, what our security means for you and where to find the main parts.
Databeamer is your secure platform for collecting, exchanging, managing and discussing confidential information efficiently. It lets you work smoothly across organisational boundaries: from professionals at partner organisations to prospective clients and private individuals entirely outside your own IT environment.
Because everything is encrypted directly on your own device, your data is always protected to the maximum. Databeamer's servers only see unreadable code; your content stays completely private. We call this zero-knowledge.
What does zero-knowledge mean for you? #
You stay in control of your data. That has three important consequences:
- Your keys never leave your device. They are created locally during setup and never shared with us. As a result, your files, chats and documents are unreadable to us and to any intruders.
- You are responsible for your keys. Because we do not have them, we cannot reset them for you. Your recovery phrase and your signed-in devices are the only ways back into your account. Treat them like the keys to a safe.
- Sharing is always a deliberate choice. A file is readable by you, by the people you share a group with and by the people you send it to. By nobody else, including Databeamer staff.
The main areas #
| Area | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Drive | Your encrypted file storage, with folders, trash and journals. |
| Transfers | Send files securely to anyone, including people without an account. |
| Requests | Ask colleagues or third parties for documents or answers through a secure form. |
| Secure Mail | Send encrypted messages with attachments, with the option to reply, also to people without an account. |
| Chat | Direct messages through chat and group chat with your team in a private group. |
| Groups | Collaborate in shared groups, each with its own Drive, chat, transfers and requests. |
Security details #
We have written the explanations in our documentation in the clearest possible language. Some features involve cryptographic encryption. In that case you also find the precise technical workings, but in a collapsible block like the one below:
Security detailsWhat is this?
Blocks like this list the cryptographic operations behind the feature above them: which keys are involved, what is encrypted on your device, what is signed, and what Databeamer's servers can and cannot see. They use the terms from the technology page and the glossary.
You can safely skip these blocks; you do not need them to work with Databeamer. They are written for the people who want to understand or check what technically happens to (confidential) data: security officers, data protection officers (DPOs), auditors and IT security officers. Every block uses the same terminology. On a page you can search for "Security details" to find technical information faster.
